Americanism

“Americanism is an unfailing love of country, loyalty to its institutions and ideas; eagerness to defend it against all enemies; undivided allegiance to the flag; and a desire to secure the blessings of liberty and posterity.”

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Americanism

At VFW Post 577, we believe that patriotism is more than a feeling—it’s a responsibility. Through our Americanism initiatives, we promote civic pride, educate our community, and honor the legacy of those who have served. This page is dedicated to the symbols, traditions, and families that embody the spirit of American service.

πŸŽ–οΈ Military Flags: Order of Precedence

When displaying military service flags, insignias, or emblems, the Department of Defense recommends the following order (from left to right as you face the flags):

Army → Marine Corps → Navy → Air Force → Space Force → Coast Guard

This order reflects the chronological establishment of each branch, with the Coast Guard placed last when operating under the Department of Homeland Security.

🌟 Star Family Recognition

Service banners are a powerful symbol of sacrifice and pride. Families of service members may display these banners in their windows to honor their loved ones.

  • Blue Star Families Represent active-duty service members. The banner features a white field with a red border and a blue star for each family member serving. Blue Star Mothers’ Day: February 1

  • Gold Star Families Represent those who lost a loved one in military service. The banner features a gold star in place of the blue. Gold Star Mother’s & Families Day: Last Sunday in September Gold Star Spouses Day: April 5

  • Silver Star Families Represent those injured, wounded, or ill due to combat. The banner features a silver star with red, white, and blue borders. Silver Star Service Banner Day: May 1

We encourage our community to recognize and honor these families for their sacrifice and strength.
